PITTSBURGH -- The 2018 edition of C. Harper Auto Group Friday Night Rivals Powered by IGS Energy kicks off Friday, Aug. 31 with a Week 1 matchup between Beaver Area and South Fayette. This Class 4A Northwest Eight Conference showdown starts the fourth season of live WPIAL high school football broadcasts on WPNT-TV.
Friday's matchup at South Fayette Stadium features two teams coming off of WPIAL semifinal appearances. The Lions finished 11-1 last season while the Bobcats were 9-3 in Class 3A. Beaver Area is making the realignment jump to PIAA Class 4A this season and South Fayette provides the first test after an opening week 26-8 win over Brashear.
South Fayette enters the 2018 conference campaign again as one of the favorites in the WPIAL, despite losing a handful of key contributors from their 2017 outfit.
The Lions suffered a 34-33 Week 0 loss to Upper St. Clair, ending their 57-game regular season winning streak.
"It is another opportunity to play a quality Beaver County opponent," South Fayette Head Coach Joe Rossi said.
"Our kids will have a little extra spring in their step knowing they will be on TV."
