PITTSBURGH -- The AHN Friday Night Rivals Powered by IGS Energy season continues Friday with a Class 5A South Hills showdown between Upper St. Clair and Baldwin, live at 7 p.m. on 22 the Point and streaming on 22thepoint.com.
Upper St. Clair has a new head coach roaming the sidelines this season, as Mike Junko takes over the storied program following the retirement of legendary coach Jim Render, the WPIAL's all-time winningest coach.
Junko - a 1992 USC graduate and former Akron quarterback - served the last two seasons as an assistant on Render's staff.
While the Panthers' style may get tweaked, the trademark of the program will stay the same under Junko.
"While we may be in different formations, the central theme will be the physicality," Junko told 22 the Point during training camp last month.
"That's what Upper St. Clair has been and what it will continue to be."
Following a season-opening 27-13 road win over South Fayette, the Panthers fell at Peters Township last week 29-21.
Meanwhile, the Baldwin Highlanders enter this matchup as one of the preseason teams to watch in the Allegheny Eight Conference.
Following several seasons of a rebuilding youth movement, head coach Loran Cooley's program now features seven returning starters on each side, including several returning skill players.
The name to know in the trenches is highly touted defensive lineman Dorien Ford, considered one of the top junior lineman in the country, with growing recruiting attention from Pitt, Penn State, Nebraska and other major college programs.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder can be a force on both lines and will cause matchup problems each week throughout the season.
Following a Week 0 non-conference loss, Baldwin rebounded by beating Butler last week 42-21.
Junko's new-look, same grit Upper St. Clair squad against a Baldwin side with high expectations will play out in this Week 2 broadcast on 22 the Point.
