PITTSBURGH -- When it comes to Western Pennsylvania high school football rivalries, Hopewell versus Central Valley is one of the newer matchups with an old school feel. The two Beaver County programs will take center stage when the C. Harper Auto Group Friday Night Rivals Powered by IGS Energy season continues this week live on 22 the Point.
The two schools separated by less than eight miles are making a return to the spotlight, following a 2011 matchup that featured two of the top WPIAL players of all time - Hopewell's Rushel Shell (West Virginia) and Central Valley's Robert Foster (Alabama) - a game that aired nationally on ESPN and allowed a rivalry to be born.
In this 2018 edition the two sides enter with identical 2-5 records, both rebuilding with young but promising rosters.
"You can throw out the records in this game, anything can happen," Central Valley Head Coach Mark Lyons told 22 the Point.
"There is something different during the week from the players' focus, to the student body excitement throughout the school."
Lyons - a 30-year coaching veteran - started the Central Valley program in 2010, with Hopewell winning the first matchup 26-22. The Warriors have won the last seven meetings, including a 38-16 victory last season.
