PITTSBURGH -- North Allegheny needed its defense to come up with several big stops during Friday's Class 6A showdown with Mt. Lebanon, none bigger than on the final play of the Tigers narrow 14-11 victory on AHN Friday Night Rivals on 22 the Point.

Pinned in their own end with one second remaining on the clock and trailing by three, the Blue Devils needed a 96-yard miracle.

After two successful laterals gave the last-second comeback some hope, the play eventually ended near mid-field, allowing the undefeated and second-ranked Tigers to breathe a sigh of relief.

Trailing 14-3 heading into the fourth quarter, Mt. Lebanon made it a game again with 2:40 to play, with quarterback Joey Daniels finding Eli Heidenreich in the endzone.

A two-point conversion cut the deficit to 14-11.

It wasn't just a final second stand from North Allegheny's defense that decided the outcome.

Head coach Art Walker Jr.'s team kept the Blue Devils out of the end zone until the final minutes, putting constant pressure on Daniels throughout the night.

Head Coach Bob Palko's Blue Devils kept pace early, taking the first lead of the game on a field goal set up by this first quarter double-pass from Daniels to Eli Heidenreich to Michael Beiersdorf.

But North Allegheny scored twice in the second half to take a 14-3 lead, breaking open what had been a defensive struggle to this point.

The top highlight of the night featured a fourth quarter double-reverse to Mason Kress that went 33 yards for a North Allegheny touchdown.

Following wins over Penn Hills and Central Catholic the Tigers, ranked second in the state in Class 6A, improve to 3-0.
