PITTSBURGH -- The Gateway Gators, defending WPIAL Class 5A champions, are making the most of this shortened 2020 season.

Playing in just their third game, the Gators defeated Woodland Hills 21-16 in Saturday's special edition of AHN Friday Night Rivals on 22 The Point.

But the victory, on the road at the Wolvarena, did not come easy against an upset-minded Woodland Hills side.

Derrick Davis, Gateway's highly-coveted recruit - set to make his college commitment announcement on Nov. 7 with several high-profile programs in pursuit including Penn State, Pitt, Ohio State and LSU - made his presence known early and often against the Wolverines.

But it was a trick play that helped the Gators strike first, an end-around pass from Jayden Hurt to Patrick Body for a 7-nothing second quarter lead.

Davis then made it 14-0 on a short touchdown plunge which gave Gateway a two-touchdown lead at halftime.

But the Woodland Hills' defense also got its fair share of hits in on the unbeaten Gators, including Armani Bailey's takedown of Davis in the third quarter.

Later, the Woodland Hills' offense finally hit a big one, with Deontae Williams finding T'Rek Scipio in stride for the touchdown. The two-point conversion cut the deficit to 14-8 late in the third quarter.

But Gateway head coach Don Holl's offense kept to its ground game in the crucial moments, and this 25-yard fourth quarter touchdown run from power back Kelvon Nelson extended their lead to 21-8 in the fourth.

Woodland Hills never backed off, keeping the decision in doubt until the final minutes.

Williams scrambled for another score with 1:54 remaining and the Wolverines' two-point conversion made it 21-16.

But Gateway recovered the ensuing onside kick to preserve the victory and improve to 3-0.
