SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) -- The holidays are made for spending time with our loved ones . Here are some family-friendly gifting options.
Movies
- Recent family friendly DVD and Blu-ray releases include The Addams Family '90s movies double feature, "The Angry Birds Movie 2," the live-action Dora the Explorer adventure "Dora and the Lost City of Gold," "Shrek: The Ultimate Collection" featuring five films, ten shorts and five television episodes, the 25th anniversary of "The Swan Princess" and the new gorgeous 4K release of "The Wizard of Oz."
Sesame Street
- It's hard to believe, but "Sesame Street" has been on air for 50 years. To celebrate Shout! Factory has released "Sesame Street: 50 Years and Counting" a two disc collection of five hours of classic footage from the television series we all grew up with.
- Out of Print Clothing has a selection of Sesame Street themed wearables.
Television series
- All three seasons of the original Scooby-Doo series, "Scooby-Doo Where Are You!" have been released in a limited edition box set shaped like a haunted house.
- Funko has a variety of Scooby-Doo themed toys including this Spooky Space Kook.
- "The Dark Crystal" was a strange, wonderful world created by Jim Henson. In 2019, Netflix revived Henson's vision with "The Dark Crystal" Age of Resistance," a fascinating prequel series that further explored the world of Thra and its inhabitants. To celebrate the franchise's return Funko released a variety of "Age of Resistance" POP! and action figures.
- Insight Editions also produced "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance - Inside the Epic Return to Thra,"a beautiful book that takes readers deeper into the creative process behind the elaborate puppets and intricate sets.
- Those looking to relive or to pass along some of their childhood favorites like the recent re-releases of "Shazam! The Complete Series," "Teen Titans: The Complete Series," "Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s Vol. 1," "SilverHawks: Season 1, Volume 1," "Jonny Quest: The Complete Original Series" and "The Jetsons: The Complete Original Series" or "Voltron: Defender of the Universe - The Complete Original Series."
How to Train Your Dragon
- The cinematic How to Train Your Dragon trilogy came to a close with "The Hidden World," but there fandom continues with toys like DreamWorks Dragons: Hatching Baby Toothless and the DreamWorks Dagons: Baby Dragon Plush series.
- Build-A-Bear has a variety of How to Train Your Dragon options including Toothless and Light Fury plush dragons.
Spirit Riding Free
- Based on the 2002 film "Spirit: The Stallion of the Cimarron," "Spirit: Riding Free" is an animated series on Netflix that follows the adventures of Fortuna "Lucky" Esperanza Navarro Prescott, a city girl relocated to the country who bonds with a wild mustang. Just Play offer a variety of Spirit collectible dolls and horses including Bebe and her horse Sarge.
- Playmobil offers numerous building sets based on the Spirit franchise.
- Those who prefer physical DVDs to digital, there are two sets available: "Spirit: Riding Free - Seasons 1-4" and "Spirit: Riding Free - Seasons 5-8."
Spirit Riding Free
- Young readers will enjoy Little, Brown and Company's Spirit Riding Free books "Merry Christmas!" an "Lucky's Guide to Wintertime Whimsy"
Minions
- There may not be a new Minions film, but Flex Watches offers a trilogy of Minions themed watches (along with a very cool line of Star Wars watches).
The Secret Life of Pets
- I was pleasantly surprised by "The Secret Life of Pets 2," a rare sequel that is better than the original. Outside of the 4K, Blu-ray and DVD releases Universal offers numerous toy options including a small plush collection.
Trolls
- With "Trolls World Tour" set to hit theaters in April 2020, its the perfect time to revisit the original film on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD or digital.
- Those looking for some Troll inspired holiday cheer should consider Big Golden Book "Trolls Holiday."
Trolls
- While you revisiting the original film, you might also want to consider the spin-off series "Trolls: The Beat Goes On!," an animated series available on DVD and streaming on Netflix.
- Hasbro also offers a gaggle of Troll toys including "Trolls Popstar Poppy," a sing-a-long doll that plays a ukulele and sings "Trolls Just Want to Have Fun."
Sh-Ra and the Princesses of Power
- Once upon a time She-Ra was toy maker Mattel's attempt to make the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe franchise appealing to young girls. These days, She-Ra is the flagship character as she and her Princesses of Power have their own rebooted animated series on Netflix while He-Man has yet to be updated (Kevin Smith has something in the works). You can revisit the original series with "She-Ra: Princess of Power - The Complete Original Series" or pick up the first three seasons of "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" on DVD.
- Seeing as She-Ra's o rigins are in toy sales, it makes sense that Mattel would offer a handful of She-Ra figures including "Battle Armor She-Ra & Swift Wind."
